Engelsberg ironworks, forge

The Swedish ironworks Engelsberg ( Engelsbergs bruk ), located in Ängelsberg, Fagersta municipality , is an industrial museum that was added to the list of world cultural heritage in 1993. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was one of the most modern ironworks in Europe. The complex includes a manor house with a park, administration building, workers' apartments and of course the industrial buildings, which still contain all of the technical equipment of that time. The Engelsberg ironworks is part of the Bergslagen Ekomuseum .

Ängelsberg is located in the Bergslagen region , the traditional mining area of Sweden. In 1681 a steelworks was founded there, which processed the iron ore from the surrounding mines. A few decades later, the plant had developed into one of Sweden's most important iron producers. In its heyday, the plant comprised around 50 buildings, from administration buildings to industrial buildings, such as B. blast furnace , smithy, scales, etc., up to workers' apartments and a liquor bar with overnight accommodation for day laborers . Not to forget the stately (manor, park and gardener's cottage, etc.) and agricultural facilities (stables, grain storage, etc.).

Towards the end of the 19th century, the smelter ran into economic difficulties due to competition from foreign iron products with modern technology. A Lancastershire forge and a modern rolling mill were built in 1917, but the plant was shut down in 1919.

The steelworks was restored in the 1970s. It is as it was in around 1870 when it was last rebuilt. The machines and technical devices from this time (especially in the blast furnace and in the forge) are still fully functional.

Nearby is the Engelsberg refinery, the world's oldest preserved oil refinery.
