Gammelstad (translated Old Town ) is the old center of Luleå in the historic province of Norrbotten in northern Sweden and Tätort (under the name Gammelstaden in the) community Luleå the province of Norrbotten County . The church village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
history
1000 years ago, today's Gammelstad was a small island in the delta of the river Lule älv . In the 12th century Gammelstad became the center of the parish (socken), which stretched from the coast to the mountains along the rivers Kalixälven , Lule älv and Råneälven .
After the Peace of Nöteborg in 1323, Sweden and Russia disagreed over the border in the north. The Swedish state tried to include the area around the Lule älv more in the empire. Priests were sent north and simple wooden churches were built. In 1339 the first service was held in Luleå. The province of Norrbotten became part of the Kingdom of Sweden with Swedish laws and taxes.
The construction of the imposing stone church, which still exists today, began in the 13th century. It testifies to the economic prosperity of the community, which resulted from the trade in skins and salmon. A decree in the 15th century stipulated that all trade in Sweden would be restricted to cities where it could be taxed. In 1621 Luleå was founded on the site of the old trading post. Already 28 years after the city's official founding, in 1649, the harbor silted up by the particularly strong in the north of Sweden Scandinavian unnoticeable end land uplift . As a result, the city of Luleå was built on the site where it is today.
Gammelstads kyrkstad
The church village of Gammelstad can be found around the church. It is a settlement of 400 huts ( kyrkstugor ) where the residents of the community could stay overnight when they came to Luleå to worship. The church village of Gammelstad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today only a few such church villages remain in Sweden. Other examples are Öjebyn in Piteå, around 60 km south, or Rättvik am Siljan .
