Råneå ( Lule Rávnna ) is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Norrbotten , in the historical province (landskap) Norrbotten .

location

Råneå belongs to the municipality of Luleå and within this since January 1, 2016 to the district of Råneå. With almost 2000 inhabitants (2015), the place is the sixth largest town in the municipality. It is located about 30 km as the crow flies north of the provincial capital - also the community center -  Luleå mainly on the left bank of the Råneälven river , about 5 km above its confluence with the Rånefjärden bay of the Bottenwiek in the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea .

To the southeast, the location is bypassed by Europastrasse 4 . The secondary provincial road BD 670 runs from Råneå on the left bank of the Råneälven up towards Böle - Niemisel . The nearest railway stations with passenger services are in Luleå and the town of Boden, which is about as far to the west .

Not far from the mouth of the Råneälven on the Baltic Sea lies the town's marina (gästhamn) .

history

The place gained importance from the 17th century, when it became the seat of the independent parish Råneå socken on March 25, 1642 , previously part of the parish Luleå. On January 1, 1863, the rural community of the same name (landskommun) emerged from the parish . From the 19th century, smaller industrial companies settled in the village, including two shoe factories in 1883 and 1930. The rural community was on January 1, 1969 in the city of Luleå, and with this in 1971 in today's municipality (commun).

Originally and until the 1950s, the place was alternatively referred to as Rånbyn ; this name has been taken for a small settlement southeast of the village, which was designated as Småort until 2000 .

Attractions

The local church designed by Johan Fredrik Åbom was built between 1854 and 1857 in place of a previous building from the 1640s. Ten church huts have been preserved near the church .
