Johan Fredrik Åbom
Johan Fredrik Åbom (born July 30, 1817 in Stockholm ; † April 20, 1900 ) was a Swedish architect .
Life
Johan Fredrik Åbom did an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, studied at the Teknologiska institutet and at the Kungliga Konstakademien in Stockholm. His classmate was Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander . After graduation and until 1882 he was a civil servant at the state architecture office. From 1843 to 1853 he was prison architect for the new provincial and state prisons, and his client was the prisoner coordination office ( Fångvårdsstyrelsen ). In 1850 Åbom became a member of the Swedish Art Academy. In 1852 he went on a short study trip to Germany with the help of a government grant.
Throughout his career he has been responsible for a large number of architectural works, both for non-profit and private purposes. These include the hospital buildings in Karlstad and Härnösand , provincial hospitals in Kalmar , Jönköping , Mariestad , Växjö , Västerås , Vänersborg , Örebro and Sala , the anatomy teaching building and the House of the Stockholm Nation at the University in Uppsala , a children's home for Freemasons in Stockholm-Kristineberg , several libraries and industrial buildings as well as numerous restaurant and theater buildings. One of them, Berns Salonger at Berzelii park , near Hamngatan in central Stockholm, is still very popular today. Berns Salonger, a place for variety and music entertainment, was designed by Åbom in 1862 for the German-born pastry chef Heinrich Robert Berns.
