Refinery on Oljeön

The Engelsberg refinery is the oldest still preserved oil refinery in the world. It was created in 1875 on the island Barrön, which is nicknamed Oljeön (oil island), in the Swedish lake Åmänningen.

The plant is located in the municipality of Fagersta , which is part of the historic province of Västmanland . The factory was set up in this remote area for safety reasons and mainly produced petroleum , gun grease and lubricants for machines. Most of the crude oil was imported from the USA . Production ceased in the 1920s as the tariffs that had been applied to competing products from abroad were abolished. The refinery is now a museum that is open to the public in the summer months. A passenger ferry runs to the island.

The Engelsberg ironworks , which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is nearby .
