The Langkofel ( 3181 m slm ) is the main summit of the Langkofel group in the Val Gardena Dolomites and a well-known climbing mountain. His name ( Ladin Saslonch , Italian Sassolungo ) means long stone / rock .
The Sassolungo extends over a kilometer in a NW-SE direction and, together with its south-east summit, known as the "Langkofeleck", makes up about half of the Sassolungo Group. The normal route leads through the southwest face to the summit connection ridge (II) and on this to the summit (III) and is extremely long. The first ascent took place on August 13, 1869 by Paul Grohmann (1838–1908). On the Langkofel there is a bivouac box as an emergency shelter, which was named after the Italian Dominican Father Reginaldo Giuliani.
Shortly before the Sella Pass ( 2180 m ), the Langkofelscharte (2681 m) between Langkofel and Fünffingerspitze can be reached by cable car , which means that even simple hikers with good equipment can circumnavigate the Langkofel with an impressive view of the Sella , Marmolata and Alpe di Siusi in a high alpine landscape becomes.
In winter, however, this gondola lift has not been open for a number of years, as the ski run through the Langkofelscharte , which was not groomed with snow groomers, claimed some lives in the past.
In a natural niche on the east side of the Sassolungo hangs a 3.20 meter high hand-carved wooden Madonna , which the sculptor Flavio Pancheri himself fixed there in 1961 with mountain guides from the Catores (alpine school and mountain guide Val Gardena).
