Vittorio Giannini

Vittorio Giannini (born October 19, 1903 in Philadelphia , † November 28, 1966 in New York City ) was an American composer of Italian descent.

Life

Giannini attended the Conservatory in Milan from 1913 onwards as a student on the basis of a scholarship . In 1917 he returned to New York City and studied from 1925 to 1930 at the Juilliard School of Music composition with Rubin Goldmark and violin with Hans Letz. With his song Tell Me, Oh Blue, Blue Sky (1927), which was later recorded on record by Mario Lanza , he recorded his first compositional successes. From 1932 to 1936 he stayed in Europe, a. a. as a scholarship holder at the American Academy in Rome . His first operas Lucedia and The Scarlet Letter premiered in Germany and were sponsored by Richard Strauss. In 1939 he settled in New York, taught at the Juilliard School, from 1941 at the Manhattan School of Music and from 1956 at the Curtis Institute . Most recently taught as the first director at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His students included u. a. John Corigliano , Nicolas Flagello and Thomas Pasatieri .

In addition to operas, Giannini composed four symphonies , other orchestral works, choral works and piano pieces. Most famous was his opera The Taming of the Shrew ( The Taming of the Shrew , 1953). In his early works there are influences of Italian verismo . Based on Brahms and Fauré , his style can be described as neo-romantic.
