List of marine protected areas in New Zealand
The list of marine protected areas in New Zealand gives an overview according to the year of creation and assignment to the North Island , South Island and the neighboring islands. The Marine Reserves Act 1971 and the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 , which were passed in 1971 and 1978, form the basis for defining the protected areas .
As of 2012, there are 33 so-called Marine Reserves (marine protected areas ) and 6 Marine Mammal Sanctuaries (protected areas for marine mammals) in New Zealand . All areas are under the Department of Conservation , which is responsible for nature conservation in New Zealand.
