Tonga Island Marine Reserve

The Tonga Island Marine Reserve is a marine reserve in the north of the South Island of New Zealand , which connects to the Abel Tasman National Park . It was established in 1993 as New Zealand's third marine reserve.

The reserve covers an area of ​​1,835 hectares, including the sea within a nautical mile of Tonga Island and coastal areas between Awaroe Head and the headland between Bark and Mosquito Bay.

There is a seal colony on Tonga Island . Since fishing is prohibited, numerous fish and crustaceans, dolphins and seabirds can be found in the reserve. The nature reserve is a popular diving area and is also used for sea ​​kayaking .
