Gustav Zeillinger

Gustav Zeillinger (born February 1, 1917 in Vienna , † August 16, 1997 in Oberalm , Salzburg ) was an Austrian politician of the FPÖ and ombudsman of the republic.

Life

After graduating from a humanistic grammar school in Vienna in 1936, he went to the Austrian Armed Forces as a one-year volunteer . From 1937 he studied law at the University of Vienna , which he completed as a trainee lawyer in 1940. In the same year he was drafted into the German Wehrmacht and at the end of the war came to Salzburg as a first lieutenant in a tank reconnaissance unit . Here he started his career as a trainee judge , founded the Salzburg Lawyers Association with a few colleagues and worked as a criminal defense attorney and lawyer from 1948 . He practiced this profession until his retirement in 1987. From 1983 to 1993 he was President of the Association of Austrian Taxpayers. From 1983 he worked for the Kronenzeitung for several years as a tax ombudsman.

In 1950 he became regional chairman of the Association of Independents (VdU) Salzburg founded a year earlier and in 1956, as a founding member of the successor organization FPÖ, its Salzburg regional party chairman . From 1959 to 1978 he held the position of deputy to the FPÖ federal party chairman .

In 1953 he was a member of the Salzburg state parliament for a short time . Between 1953 and 1977 he was one of the longest serving members of the Austrian National Council (7th to 14th legislative period) and was soon known for his oratorical brilliance. As a member of the National Defense Council , he was able to contribute to some reforms of the armed forces and, as chairman of the parliamentary judicial committee (1970-77), played a key role in the reform of criminal law under Justice Minister Christian Broda .

When the office of the Federal Ombudsman was introduced at the beginning of 1977 , he was elected to this position for six years together with Franz Bauer (ÖVP) and Robert Weisz (SPÖ). His successor in this office was the FPÖ mandate Helmuth Josseck in mid-1983 .
