National Defense Council
The National Defense was in Austria a consultative body of the Federal Chancellery until the establishment of the National Security Council in 2001. He anchored the defense law in § 5th
The National Defense Council consisted of the following people:
- Federal Chancellor as Chairman
- Vice Chancellor
- Foreign minister
- Defense Minister
- In addition, other federal ministers could be consulted in an advisory capacity
- General troop inspector
- an official of the Ministry of Defense appointed by the Minister
- twelve National Council members and members of the Federal Council of the parties represented in parliament, with the strongest party each having to include three NR MPs and one BR member and the second strongest three NR MPs and one BR member.
The National Defense Council was to be consulted for advice on all changes to the law that affected comprehensive national defense , not just the military. Although the results had no binding effect, they were usually adopted by the decision-makers. The deliberations were confidential and not open to the public.
In addition, the members had the right to visit all military facilities. The National Defense Council was thus also a control body for the Federal Army .
