The Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 is a law in New Zealand that regulates the protection of marine mammals in the country's territory.

Jurisdiction

The Department of Conservation was tasked with implementing the law . The Department may, among other protected areas stating its marine mammals regulate the fishing of fishing for the protection of animals and whale and dolphin -Observations ( whale watching ) regulate. New Zealand was a founding member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1946 and since then has been committed to protecting marine mammals internationally without exception.

As of July 2018, New Zealand has six Marine Mammal Sanctuaries , five of which are for the protection of the Hector's dolphins and one for the New Zealand sea lions and southern right whales .
