The Sutherland Sound ( Māori Te Hapua ) is a fjord on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The fjord was named after Donald Sutherland , a native of Scots, who settled on the banks of Milford Sound in December 1877 and discovered the Sutherland Falls on November 10, 1880 and later the fjord in 1883 during his explorations.

geography

The approximately 10 km long Sutherland Sound , which is located around 25 km southwest of Milford Sound on the southwest part of the west coast of the South Island, is not a typical fjord in appearance. The for Tasman out to 2.7 km open part has more the character of a km inland around 2.4 protruding bay and m from the 70 wide and silted partially bottleneck up to the Rivers Dark River and Light River reaching Section, is more like an elongated lake between the mountains that spreads to around 900 m.

Despite its silting up, the entire Sutherland Sound is exposed to the tides , with the surface water of the upper part consisting of 47% salt water and from 4 m depth the proportion increases to 90%. The total length of the coast of the fjord is around 26 km.

Marine reserve

The 449 hectare lake-like part of the fjord has been under protection as the Te Hapua ( Sutherland Sound ) Marine Reserve since 2005 , but has not yet been scientifically researched and is rarely visited.
