Nicolas Flagello
Nicolas Oreste Flagello (born March 15, 1928 in New York City , † March 16, 1994 in New Rochelle ) was an American composer.
Life
Nicolas Flagello was born in New York City into a family with a long musical tradition. His brother Ezio Flagello became a bass who sang very successfully at the Metropolitan Opera . One of Flagello's first music teachers was the composer Vittorio Giannini . With him he then studied composition at the Manhattan School of Music and conducting with Ionel Perlea . In 1955 he went to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome , where he studied with Ildebrando Pizzetti . The first recordings of his works date from the early 1960s. His work includes compositions in almost all genres, including six operas, two symphonies and eight concerts. He reached the peak of his work with his oratorio , The Passion of Martin Luther King (1968), which premiered in 1974. Nicolas Flagello was one of the last composers to have a distinctive style of expression based entirely on the principles and techniques of European late romanticism . In the mid-1980s, his career was suddenly interrupted by a degenerative disease. He died in New Rochelle , New York on March 16, 1994.
