In 2007 Lorenzo Ferrero was appointed to the board and elected Vice-President of SIAE, the Italian association of authors and publishers. In the same year he published Manuale di scrittura musicale , a manual that describes the basic rules of correct and elegant music writing from both an orthographic and a graphic point of view. The manual is aimed at all composers, musicologists, teachers, students and manuscript editors with practical information. In 2008 he translated, edited and published Lo Studio dell'orchestrazione , the Italian edition of Samuel Adler's The Study of Orchestration , a seminal manual.

Lorenzo Ferrero was Professor of Composition at the Milan Conservatory from 1980 to 2016. He teaches at St. Mary College of Maryland and at LUISS Business School, a department of the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali in Rome. In addition, as a member of the Italian National Union of Composers, Librettists and Authors, he co-founded the ECSA, the European Association of Composers and Songwriters. From 2011 to 2017 he was chairman of the CIAM, the International Council of Music Authors. He is currently Honorary President of CIAM.

He has been featured in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera as "the most successful opera composer of his generation in Italy" and in The New Penguin Opera Guide as "a major exponent of the neotonal tendencies shared by a number of Italian composers of his generation and who is a successful character for the narrative music theater, with which a wider audience should be reached than from the heirs of the modernist tradition. "

Works

In addition to the original works listed below, Lorenzo Ferrero completed the orchestration of the third version of Giacomo Puccini's opera La rondine , which premiered at the Teatro Regio di Torino on March 22, 1994. With a group of six other Italian composers he wrote the Requiem per le vittime della mafia , a composition for soloists, choir and orchestra based on an Italian text by Vincenzo Consolo . The Requiem premiered in Palermo Cathedral on March 27, 1993. He also wrote the music for the opening ceremony of the 1997 Alpine World Ski Championships , including the official anthem, backing music for stage productions and a film score. Several videos of his work can be heard on YouTube. The British musicologist David Osmond-Smith described his style as "an unabashed synthesis of classical traditions and pop [...] that never forgets its 19th century predecessors."
