history

Stump of column under the baptismal font in the parish church of Aldringen

A Roman column stump from the 2nd century under the baptismal font in the parish church of Aldringens indicates that the area has been populated for a very long time. Aldringen was first mentioned as a parish in 1131 under the name Aljer. There used to be a castle in Aldringen at what is now called Burgstadt. Nothing more can be seen of this castle. Descendants of the Aldringen family still live in Luxembourg and Vienna as recognized noble families. Even Johann Graf von Aldringen probably came from this family.

population

Most of the population of Aldringen comes from the Eifel. In Aldringen they speak predominantly "aljer Platt", a dialect of the Moselle-Franconian dialect group .

Folklore and customs

Castle fire

Aldringen castle fire

The castle fire can be traced back to the ancient pagan - Germanic festival of the spring equinox. This festival is intended to express the hope that the light and warmth will soon win over the winter darkness and cold. For the castle fire, sticks and straw are collected and burned on the Sunday after Carnival around the castle tree, a tree trunk on which a straw doll hangs. After it falls, the castle tree is auctioned.

Pancake food

On the Saturday before Carnival, the school children celebrate "Fat Thursday". Then they gather to eat yeast pancakes and hats .

Hit the pitcher

For the tent fair , the girls from the village are "collected" by the bachelors. A clay jug is then placed on a barrel and the willing bachelors try to smash this jug with their eyes blindfolded. Krugkönig will be whoever succeeds. The jug queen is determined by a jumping competition over the barrel.

The clatter at Easter time

Rasp from the Belgian Eifel (Aldringen)

During Holy Week, when the bells fall silent, the village children have to help out by clattering their rattles and rasps .

The May night

On the night of May 1st, the village bachelors go out to sing a song to the girls.

Burn lice

In the early hours of the morning after their wedding night, the bride and groom and their die-hard friends move in front of their apartment to end the party around a burning heap of straw. The straw is supposed to symbolize the couple's mattress. When it burns, salt is thrown into the fire to keep away evil influences. In addition, the wedding guests attend when the couple enter their home for the first time as a married couple. Getting in is usually made more difficult, e.g. B. by blocking the entrance with bales of straw or logs. The bed is often specially prepared. The sheets are turned in such a way that one cannot easily crawl into bed. In this case, the couple must first make the bed before they can use it.

Erect the fair tree

For the tent fair, the fair tree, a tree trunk decorated with a wreath, is set up. The fair tree custom is similar to the maypole custom .

economy

The economy of the place is determined by agriculture and timber industry as well as a few medium-sized businesses.

Personalities

  • Adam Thomas (born August 15, 1799 - † January 10, 1877), "Den Allijer Hähr", pastor in Aldringen. The legacy of Pastor Thomas is a herbal schnapps called "Thommes" or "Allijer Hähr". The original recipe is now in the possession of a pharmacist from Sankt Vith .
