Diepert (March 2014)

Diepert is a single settlement in the Belgian Eifel , which consists of just one house with two residents (as of December 31, 2016) and belongs to the municipality of Burg-Reuland in the German-speaking community .

geography

Diepert is located on a hill directly on the German border in the Ourtal , a few kilometers south of the village of Weweler and a few kilometers east of the village of Stoubach .

history

The only house in Diepert is the Gasthof Zum Jägerhaus , which has been owned by the Schröder family for three generations. In 1925, the then innkeeper Peter Schröder had to choose between Belgian and German citizenship because the border ran right through his house. For practical reasons, he decided to take Belgian citizenship, as the nearest train station at the time was on Belgian territory in Burg-Reuland. Since then, the border has led around the house and crossed the vegetable garden. However, Diepert still receives electricity and water from Germany, while the telephone line was laid by the Belgian telephone company Belgacom. The inn has been closed since January 1st, 2005.
