history

Reuland Castle was built as a fort in Roman times; in the 10th century it was converted into a royal palace by the Franks. Charlemagne is also said to have lived there in the meantime. A chapel in "Rullant" was mentioned in a document before 755. This document gave the Lords of Reuland the right to present the church in Thommen, whose pastor also presided over the Reuland chapel. In 1336 the chapel of Our Lady in the Ulftal was called dilapidated. A new construction of the chapel was possibly started in the early 17th century by Balthasar von Palant. The current parish church of St. Stephen was finally built in 1771. In the land register of Johann Turck from Kleve from 1592, numerous Reuländer lords and their family connections are listed along with the family coat of arms. These included, for example, the von Reuland , von Berg, von Habsburg, von Luxemburg, von Pallandt, von Millendonck, von Soetern, von Glymes, von Brandenburg families and the Lords of Ouren.

Attractions

Reuland Castle

Reuland Castle

Reuland Castle , one of the largest castle ruins in the Eifel, stands high above the town . After being destroyed several times, the castle was rebuilt and expanded several times. The old keep is a symbol of the former power of the Reuländer lords and counts. The ruin has been a listed building since 1900 after having been used as a quarry for decades.

Parish Church of St. Stephen

Also worth seeing is the parish church of St. Stephen from the late 18th century. The family crypt of the extinct noble family von Pallandt is located in the church .

Museums

In the Kulturhaus Burg-Reulands - the former school of the town - there is a local museum, which shows everyday objects of rural life. This includes household appliances, tools of old trades and agricultural equipment. The Paul Gerardy Museum is also housed in this building. There are exhibits on the life and work of the writer.
