St. Stephen's Church

St. Stephanus is the church in the village of Burg-Reuland in the Belgian Eifel , which belongs to the municipality of the same name in the German-speaking community . The town's Roman Catholic parish church is dedicated to St. Stephen .

history

As early as the 13th century, there was a simple chapel on the site of today's church. This was dependent on the parish in Weweler and was possibly replaced by a new chapel or at least rebuilt in 1621 on the initiative of Balthasar von Pallandt.

The current church was built in 1771. In 1869 it was extended by a sacristy and in 1912 by a side aisle , a transept and a new choir with sacristy. The church has been a listed building since 1988.

Furnishing

The inventory of the Church of St. Stephen includes the main altar made of white lacquered wood with gilded rocaille ornaments , a pulpit from 1759 and tombstones made of right slate .

The high grave of Balthasar von Pallandt and his wife, who were members of the extinct noble family von Pallandt , is made of Belgian slate marble and was reassembled in 1912 after the sarcophagus was probably dismantled in the 18th century and walled up in the north wall of the church. The deceased are depicted in life-size bas-relief lying on its cover plate. Ancestral coats of arms can be seen on the foot and long sides.
