Auel is a village in the Belgian Eifel with 118 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2016), which belongs to the municipality of Burg-Reuland in the German-speaking Community .

geography

Auel is located in the Ourtal between the villages of Steffeshausen (also municipality of Burg-Reuland) and Hemmeres (part of the municipality of Winterspelt in Rhineland-Palatinate ).

history

The term “Auel” seems to come from the term “Aue” or “Auwe”, which is used to describe areas of land rich in humus in river valleys. The original location was on the right bank of the Our, but was gradually relocated to the slope on the left bank due to repeated floods. The first chapel in Auel is mentioned in 1619, but it was demolished again in 1820 and replaced by a new building that was ready for occupancy in 1823. The current chapel was built between 1933 and 1935.
