Weweler - St. Hubertus Chapel in the middle of the cemetery

The St. Hubertus chapel is located in Weweler in the Belgian Eifel , a village that belongs to the municipality of Burg-Reuland in the German-speaking community . She is the St. Dedicated to Hubertus . Currently only baptisms, weddings and funerals take place there, but no regular masses. So the chapel is more historically significant. The deceased from the villages of Weweler, Stoubach and Diepert are buried in the cemetery surrounding the chapel .

history

The St. Hubertus chapel was Reuland's parish church until 1772. The tower from the 13th century is the oldest surviving part of the building. The nave and choir of the building date from the 15th century, although the originally single- nave nave was expanded into two aisles and uniformly vaulted in the 16th century. In 1735 the church building received an entrance hall and a sacristy . In the same year, the windows were installed on the west side of the nave. In quick succession, in 1678 and 1711, lightning bolts destroyed the chapel tower. During the subsequent restoration in 1712, the tower was raised around the current bell chamber and given the helmet that was characteristic of the building from then on. After another lightning strike damaged the tower in 1918, it was given a simple pyramid roof during repairs . Only after major restoration work in 1986 was the tower returned to its original roof structure. The chapel was last extensively renovated in 2008/09 and received a. a. a new paint job and a new lightning rod. It has been a listed building since 1950.

description

The chapel is a one-pillar church, as its vault is only supported by a single column placed in the middle of the room and by the outer walls. Visible from afar, it sits enthroned with its Romanesque tower and its baroque helmet below the 480 m high Ourberg. It has stained glass windows in the Gothic style and a Gothic nave with a ceiling that forms a Gothic reticulated vault.

The sculptor Hennes from Neuerburg had made the main altar in the 1770s; Pierre de Hainausse took care of the coloring. It has a slightly curved rococo trim , at the front a of ornaments framed bas-relief of St. Hubertus can be seen. The choir stalls with their carved knee benches were also made by the sculptor Hennes. The two side altars also date from the 18th century. Grave slabs and grave crosses are embedded in the floor of the nave. Here is u. a. the tombstone of Georg Friedrich August Ferrand von Montigny, who had the Brachter Castle built in 1782 . The remains of two medieval wall paintings were discovered in 1986 in the choir and on the west wall of the nave translocated where they can be seen today.
