Alfersteg is a village in the German-speaking Community in Belgium and part of the municipality of Sankt Vith . The place has 34 inhabitants (information as of December 31, 2015).

Alfersteg is located around eight kilometers east of the core town of Sankt Vith and is only around 500 meters from the Belgian-German border. The village lies on both sides of the Our in the Ourgrund , a section of the Ourtal. Together with the other five villages of the Ourgrund, it belongs to the Mackenbach parish. In Alfersteg, the historic connecting route between Sankt Vith and Bleialf crosses the Our.

Colloquially, Alfersteg is also called Bärenschweiz . That is why there is a small memorial with a bear statue in the middle of the village, near the Our Bridge.

history

Alfersteg belonged to the Thommen farm until 1795 . From the beginning of the 19th century until 1976, Alfersteg was administratively divided into two parts: The part of the place east of the Our belonged to the old community of Schönberg ; the part west of the Our was administered by the municipality of Lommersweiler . With the Belgian municipality reform in 1977 , both municipalities were merged into the new large municipality of Sankt Vith.
