history

Wallerode Castle

Wallerode was first mentioned in a document in 1157 as Waltenrote in the description of the wilderness area of the Archbishops of Cologne. Around 1660, Wallerode Castle was built , possibly on the remains of an old castle, which today, as a protected cultural monument, is the town's greatest attraction. Some residential buildings in the village of Wallerode were added to the municipality of Amel during the Belgian municipal reform in 1977 , so that Wallerode is now officially listed as a district of both the municipality of Amel and the municipality of Sankt Vith.
