The Koyon Tournament , also known as Yonko Tournament , is a sporting event in South Korea where members of Korea University and Yonsei University compete in the disciplines of soccer , rugby , baseball , basketball and ice hockey .
background
Since 1925, the two private SKY universities in South Korea, Korea University and Yonsei University, have been linked by a traditional rivalry. This tradition was based on the comparable rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge in the United Kingdom and their rowing competitions . Today, the tournament is one of the most famous sporting events in South Korea and is also attracting a great deal of attention outside the circle of members of both universities.
history
The two universities, at that time still called Boseong College and Yonhi College , dueled each other from 1925 under the direction of the Joseon Sports Council at irregular intervals, first in tennis. In 1927 a friendly soccer game followed. Two years later both schools competed against each other again in basketball under the direction of the YMCA . Over the years there have also been competitions in baseball, volleyball, athletics, wrestling, table tennis, judo and kendo.
After Japan regained independence , the competitions, which Yonsei University calls the Yon-Ko tournament and Korea University the Ko-Yon tournament, established themselves more and more as an annual and multi-discipline competition tradition. The university that was victorious in a larger number of disciplines is considered the winner of the year. But draws are also possible. Since 1965, the two universities have split nine times without a winner.
