The Super Match ( 슈퍼 매치 ) is a football derby between FC Seoul and Suwon Samsung Bluewings . This derby has been held annually since April 10, 1996 in the K League , when FC Seoul was still called Anyang LG Cheetahs. It is the most famous, oldest and most popular derby in South Korea .

history

Original - Jijidae Derby (1996-2003)

In order to root the league more firmly in the individual regions of South Korea, the franchises were distributed across the country. Therefore, FC Seoul (then LG Cheetahs) had to leave Seoul and move to Anyang , where it was now called Anyang LG Cheetahs . Suwon Samsung Bluewings started playing in the K League in 1996. At the same time, LG Electronics (which owned Anyang LG Cheetahs) and Samsung Electronics (which Suwon Samsung Bluewings owned) were competitors in the electronics industry. This started the rivalry between the two clubs.

The derby was named after the Route 1 motorway that connected the cities of Suwon and Anyang . The Jijidae derby has not been held since 2004 because Anyang LG Cheetahs moved back to Seoul. Since then, the derby between Seoul and Suwon has been referred to as the Korean Super Match.
