John B. Mansbridge

John B. Mansbridge (born March 20, 1917 in Geddes , South Dakota , † January 11, 2016 in La Quinta , California ) was an American art director and production designer who worked as a film architect on more than 100 productions between 1956 and 1991 was involved. He became internationally known through his work for films such as The daring witch in her flying bed , Island at the end of the world , Elliot, the Schmunzelmonster , The Black Hole and Tron .

life and career

John B. Mansbridge was born in Geddes, South Dakota in 1917 to Jack Mansbridge and Wanda Anderson. After retiring from the army in 1946, he embarked on a career in film architecture. Mansbridge first worked at the RKO Art Department under Van Nest Polglase , and later in the 1950s he also worked for TV shows. As art director and production designer , he has been involved in over 100 film productions over the course of his career, including over two decades as a film architect at Disney Studios . Production designer Carroll Clark was his mentor at the beginning.

Overall, Mansbridge was nominated twice for an Oscar in the category Best Production Design. At the 1972 Academy Awards for his participation in the film The Daredevil Witch in Her Flying Bed with Peter Ellenshaw , Walter H. Tyler , Al Roelofs and Hal Gausman , and at the 1975 Academy Awards for Island at End of the World with Peter Ellenshaw, Emile Kuri and Hal Gausman.

In 1988 Mansbridge won an Emmy for Outstanding Artistic Achievement for his work on the CBS series Beauty and the Beast . He also received an ADG Lifetime Achievement Award from the Art Directors Guild in 2006 .

Mansbridge was married to Colleen Cuccia. From this connection come the son Mark W. Mansbridge and the daughter Robin Garver Mansbridge.
