Al Roelofs

Alexander "Al" Roelofs (born October 27, 1906 in the Netherlands ; † July 2, 1990 in Los Angeles ) was a Dutch-born film architect working for American film.

Life

The Dutch-born son of US-based Belgian-Dutch parents came to Los Angeles in 1922. There he made his first contacts in film as an extra and stuntman . For example, Roelofs doubled the silent film star John Gilbert .

Roelofs joined Paramount Pictures as a set designer in 1935 , for which he would work for the next three decades. He has been an independent film architect since the beginning of the 1950s, most recently Al Roelofs took the position of chief architect and head of the drawing department. In the 1960s, Roelofs mainly outfitted routine westerns for film producer AC Lyles .

Of Roelof's drafts of scenes, his late drafts of scenes, which he made on behalf of Walt Disney Productions , stand out . His building for Island at the End of the World earned him an Oscar nomination in 1975 . The 70-year-old Roelofs ended his career with the science fiction film The Black Hole and with Tron , which is considered the first fully computer-animated film.
