Henn-Kaarel Hellat (born April 5, 1932 in Viljandi ; † October 13, 2017 ) was an Estonian critic and writer .

Life

Hellat was born in 1932 as the son of officer Jüri Hellat, who was picked up by the NKVD after the Sovietization of Estonia and executed in Norilsk in 1942 . Hellat went to school in Tallinn from 1939 to 1941 and in Viljandi from 1941 to 1948. A few more school years in Tartu followed , which were interrupted by his military service in the Soviet Army . After a few years in civil service, he studied law at the University of Tartu from 1958 to 1961 , but without completing his studies.

He then made his way through as a casual worker and went to Tallinn in 1968. Here he was editor of the magazine Küsimused ja vastused (“Questions and Answers”) until 1975 . From 1975 to 1983 he lived as a freelance writer in Tartu, after which he worked for the cultural newspaper Sirp for two years . After 1985 he held various offices within the Estonian literary business. Hellat was a member of the Estonian Writers' Union from 1975 .

Literary work

Hellat began with poetry in the 1960s and published his first poem in 1969 in the newspaper Noorte Hääl ("Voice of Youth"). However, it made its debut in 1973 with a prose collection that includes science fiction stories and a crime story. The criticism saw a parallel here to the antiheroes in Enn Vetemaa . Hellat remained true to these two genres in his other prose works. His two-part science fiction novel Die Welt der Frauen (1976, 1978) received the most attention. Here a world is represented in which humanity is organized in the manner of bees, i.e. H. male representatives are only used for reproduction. They are not good for anything else, so the ratio between men and women is around 1: 500. With regard to the emancipation of women, the criticism noted parallels to Aimée Beekman .

Hellat published a few more volumes of poetry and later appeared primarily as a critic and author of memoirs (5 volumes, 2002–2008).
