Claude Turmes (born November 26, 1960 in Diekirch ) is a Luxembourg politician ( Déi Gréng ) and energy minister in the Bettel-Schneider government . Before that, he was a member of the European Parliament for 19 years and then State Secretary in the Luxembourg Ministry of the Environment for six months.

Life

After graduating from high school, Turmes studied physical education in Louvain-la-Neuve and has been a physical education teacher since 1986.

Even then, he was also interested in the environment. From 1989 he was active in the environmental protection organization Mouvement écologique , 1995-1997 he was secretary of the umbrella organization Friends of the Earth Europe . Since then, his main focus has been energy policy. Between 1995 and 1997 he was Vice President of the non-governmental organization EUFORES, which advocates renewable energies in Europe.

In 1999, Claude Turmes was elected for the first time for the Luxembourg green party Déi Gréng as one of six members of his country in the European Parliament . In 2004, 2009 and 2014 he was re-elected. From 2002 Turmes was deputy chairman of the Greens-EFA group and was confirmed in this position in 2004 and 2009. He was a member of Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and was the energy policy coordinator of his group.

From 2009 to 2014, Turmes was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the delegation for relations with the United States. As a deputy, he was in the Delegation for relations with Japan and in the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.

In the 2014–2019 legislative period, Claude Turmes was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the delegation for relations with India until June 19, 2018 . He served as an alternate on the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and on the delegation for relations with the United States.

On June 20, 2018, Turmes became State Secretary in the Grand Duchy's Ministry of the Environment, before he was sworn in as Minister for State Planning and Energy in the Bettel cabinet of Grand Duke Henri on December 5, 2018 . Tilly Metz took up his place in the EU Parliament .
