Frank Engel (born May 10, 1975 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg politician . He is a member of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) in Luxembourg and the European People's Party in the European Parliament . On January 26, 2019, he was elected as the successor to Marc Spautz as the new party chairman of the CSV.

Life

After completing school at Diekirch High School from 1987 to 1994, Engel studied law at the University of Brussels and Metz and graduated in 1998. Engel then worked as an assistant to the politician Jacques Santer in the European Parliament from December 1999 to June 2001.

Engel has been a member of the European Parliament for the CSV since 2009 and is a member of the EPP in the European Parliament .

Engel is Vice-Chair of the Delegation for Relations with the People's Republic of China (D-CN), a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and the Special Committee on Tax Rulings and Other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect (TAXE 2). He is also a deputy member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and in the delegations for relations with the countries of Central America (DCAM), for relations with the Pan-African Parliament (DPAP) and in the Euro - Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (DLAT).

In addition to his work in the European Parliament, Frank Engel has been Honorary Consul of Armenia in Luxembourg since 2006 and contributed to the 2013 book on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict .

In December 2013, the Luxembourg District Court imposed a 28-month driving ban , including 24 months on probation and a fine, against Engel for drunk driving.

On February 20, 2017, Frank Engel, together with Eleni Theocharous and Jaromír Štětina, was an election observer at a constitutional referendum in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, now renamed the Artsakh Republic , almost entirely inhabited by Armenians and internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan . In an official statement, the three MPs praised the will of the "people of Arzach to actively shape their democracy". According to information from Frank Engel, the “terror regime of Baku” led by İlham Əliyev then applied via Interpol for the extradition of the European parliamentarians by “red tender”.

On September 3, 2017, he caused a stir with his controversial behavior on social media after he commented on the conduct of the Luxembourg government with a Nazi comparison .

Frank Engel has written three works on Europe and its financial and democratic crisis, in which he seeks ways to strengthen the Union again and finally to lead Europe out of the protracted crisis.
