Cavalcade (Diekirch)

The Cavalcade of Diekirch is a carnival parade in Luxembourg . With an average of around 20,000 visitors, the parade is one of the highlights of the Luxembourg Carnival and takes place annually on the Sunday before Shrove Monday.

Other Carnivals are found in Luxembourg in Wasserbillig , Petange , Remich (the so-called Pretzel Sunday ) and Schifflange .

history

The term Cavalcade goes back to 1349 and referred to a parade with horses and people. Today it is understood as a carnival parade. The first Cavalcade in Diekirch was organized in 1870. Then it took until 1882 before a second edition was published. The 3rd and 4th Cavalcades took place in 1884 and 1897. In 1900 the Diekircher Cavalcade had the motto of baptism.

Cavalcaden were also organized in 1946, 1947, 1949 and 1954. The festival has been held annually since 1979; the cycle was only interrupted in 1991 (because of the Gulf War ).

Until 2005 the route ran through the pedestrian zone of the old town, today it leads around the old town.
