The Rigshospitalet ( German  Reich hospital ), colloquially short "Riget" ( German  the kingdom ) is measured by the number of beds, according to the University Hospital of Odense , the largest hospital in Denmark . It is part of the University Hospital of Copenhagen University and is operated by the Hovedstaden region.

The Rigshospitalet is located on Fælledparken in the Østerbro district of the capital Copenhagen between the streets Blegdamsvej, Tagensvej and Nørre Allé. It fulfills national and regional functions in all medical specialties except skin diseases , occupational medicine and child psychiatry . The hospital is divided into eight centers, which are administratively and financially independent of each other. The six treatment and two interdisciplinary centers each have several departments.

history

The Rigshospitalet was opened on March 30, 1757 under the name Kongelig Frederiks Hospital , named after King Friedrich V , in Bredgade in the center of Copenhagen. From 1903 the state owned the house.

The Rigshospitalet around 1910

In 1910 a new building designed by the architect Martin Borch was inaugurated on Blegdamsfælled. At the same time the old Frederiks Hospital was closed. The Danmark Design Museum has been located in the building since 1926 .

In 1958 it was decided to expand the hospital. The new buildings were built between 1960 and 1978. In 1970, the Rigshospital put the first part of the 16-story central complex into operation. The construction of the south complex was finished in 1974.

The Rigshospitalet was state-owned until 1995. After that, it was taken over by the Hovedstadens Sygehusfællesskab , a municipal company. The Rigshospitalet has been operated by the Hovedstaden region since 2007 . With this structural reform, the special statutory status of the house formally ended in 2007. Until then, the Danish parliament , the Folketing , had decided on the objectives and development of the hospital, which was reflected in Section 2 of the Act on the Hovedstadens Sygehusfællesskab : “The Sygehusfællesskab is to be the Rigshospitalet, a medical research center for special tasks in patient care, research and ensure training. "

Until 2007, helicopters for delivering emergency patients from all over the country, from ships and oil platforms landed in the nearby Fælledpark. On November 2nd, 2007, with the help of a donation from the AP Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation, a helipad was inaugurated on the roof of the hospital.
