The Rømø-Sylt-Linie (also known as the Sylt ferry ) is a nine nautical mile long ferry connection between the ferry port of Havneby on the Danish island of Rømø and List on the neighboring German island of Sylt .

history

The Rømø-Sylt ferry line

On July 7, 1963 the ferry connection operated by the Lindinger Reederei was opened. Initially only people were transported, but by the end of 1963 the first combined car and passenger ferry was used. In 1979 the Flensburger Förde Reederei (today Förde Reederei Seetouristik - FRS) took over this line from the bankruptcy estate of the Lindinger Reederei and operates this ferry connection with the subsidiary Rømø-Sylt Linie GmbH & Co. KG to this day. This ferry connection is the only alternative to car train traffic over the Hindenburgdamm for motorized individual traffic to and from Sylt .

The travel time on the connection is around 35 to 40 minutes today and leads through the Lister Tief .

The whereabouts of selected units

Westerland and Vikingland immediately after their retirement in the port of Havneby

The Westerland (built in 1971, Husum shipyard ) left the port of Havneby on November 4, 2006 for its last voyage in German waters. The former ferry was prepared for its Atlantic crossing at the Husum shipyard. In February 2007 she arrived at her new location, the Fiji Islands, without any significant incident , where she continued to operate as a ferry under her old name.

The sister ship Vikingland (built in 1974, Husum shipyard) was sold to the Italian Saipem group based in Milan at the end of 2007 . After fundamental renovations in 2008, she is used under the name Ersai 3 as a supply and workshop ship for the oil industry in the Caspian Sea off the coast of Kazakhstan . The ship sails under the flag of Kazakhstan, the new home port is Limassol in Cyprus .
