Karl Paul Ernst von Bentheim-Steinfurt (born August 30, 1729 , † June 30, 1780 ) was Count of Steinfurt .

Life

He was the son of the ruling Count Friedrich and his wife Franziska Charlotte, nee. Countess zur Lippe. The father died early and Karl Paul Ernst became head of the family of the Bentheim-Steinfurt family in 1733 , but initially had to share control of the Steinfurt and Alps areas with his great uncle Statius Philipp von Bentheim-Bentheim (1668–1749).

He enjoyed an excellent upbringing under his great-uncle's guardianship. Accompanied by his court master Johann Christoph Buch , who was appointed in 1743 , the nobleman undertook long trips to perfect his language skills. In 1748 he married Charlotte Sophie von Nassau-Siegen . After the death of his uncle Statius Philipp in 1749, the count came to the government in 1750 and lived for a time in Paris, where he became acquainted with Voltaire .

Karl Paul Ernst von Bentheim-Steinfurt had a strong historical interest and collected valuable books, incunabula , manuscripts, pictures, coins and natural history rarities. From 1765 he had the important Steinfurter Bagno park laid out. It is reported that he cared about the well-being of his subjects and was therefore respected and loved by them.

From 1770 the count belonged to the Electoral Palatinate Academy of Sciences in Mannheim .

His fourth and youngest daughter Caroline von Bentheim-Steinfurt was active as a writer.

The successor to the government was the son Ludwig Wilhelm Geldricus Ernst zu Bentheim and Steinfurt (1756-1817), who is characterized as highly educated, interested in intellectual and scientific research and economical.
