Karl Drewes

Karl Drewes (born August 15, 1895 in Wilhelmshaven , † August 30, 1958 in Oldenburg ) was an officer in the air force of the Wehrmacht .

Life

Drewes joined the Imperial Army on August 15, 1914 and served in the infantry during World War I and later in the air force . On December 3, 1915, he was promoted to lieutenant .

Since November 1, 1933, he served in the camouflaged, still under construction Luftwaffe as captain and teacher at the Great Fighting School (KFS) in Jüterbog and Tutow . From November 1, 1935, he was major and company chief of the Air Base Company at the Dresden Aviation School. In 1938 he was a pilot in Kampfgeschwader 138 "Hindenburg" . After he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 1, 1938 , he took over the role of commander of the Stendal Air Base Command in 1939 . After the combat squadron zbV 1 was reorganized in Stendal on August 26, 1939 , he took over the post of squadron captain and later that of group commander of Group II. From November 1939 to September 1940 he was then a squadron commodore of Kampfgeschwader zbV 2 . After he headed the Air Force Aviation School in Jesau from December 12, 1940 , he was appointed Colonel on April 1, 1941 . On March 24, 1942 he took over the Kampfgeschwader zbV 2 as a squadron commodore, before he became commander of the Luftwaffe Jäger Regiment 35 of the 18th Luftwaffe field division in December 1942 . But already on January 1, 1943 he took over the position of a squadron commodore of the Kampfgeschwader zbV 1, later renamed Transportgeschwader 1. After he was appointed major general on October 1, 1944 , he took over the post of commander Koflug 3 on January 9, 1945 / III, which he completed by the end of the war. He was taken prisoner by the Allies on May 8, 1945 , from which he was released on July 7, 1947.
