Squadron commodors
Geschwaderkommodore (also Commodore for short ) is the post designation in the Bundeswehr for the commander or commanding officer of an airborne unit with regimental status or an anti-aircraft missile squadron . Officers in the rank of lieutenant colonel / frigate captain ( OF5-designated ) or colonel / sea captain are transferred to one of these prominent posts .
Air Force and Aviation
In the air forces of various states, Commodore can be used both as a rank and as a service position. Some civil airlines also use the term as an honorary designation for senior flight captains in a managerial position.
Germany

In the air force and the navy of the German armed forces , Commodore is the functional designation for a commander of a flying squadron , usually in the rank of colonel or sea captain .
Hierarchically, the commodore corresponds to the commander of a ship squadron of the navy or the commander of a regiment of the army . The commanders of the anti-aircraft missile squadrons of the Air Force are also referred to as commodors or squadron commodors .
NVA
In the air forces of the NVA and the People's Navy , Commodore was neither used as a functional designation nor as a military rank.
Wehrmacht
In the air force of the armed forces , the function designation was Commodore for a commander of a squadron or flying association introduced. It was independent of the rank, which could vary between captain and colonel .
Other countries
In Great Britain and many Commonwealth countries, the rank of Air Commodore corresponds to the Commodore of the Navy and the Brigadier of the Land Forces.
In the Netherlands, the corresponding Air Force rank is simply called Commodore , while the naval designation is Commandeur .
