Kurt Streitwolf (born July 3, 1871 in Heide , Kingdom of Prussia , † August 30, 1954 in Stade ) was a captain of the German protection force in German South West Africa and an imperial resident in the Caprivi Strip .

Life

Streitwolf became a lieutenant in the Prussian army in 1891 and went to German South West Africa as an officer in 1896 . He joined the Schutztruppe for German South West Africa in 1899, served as first lieutenant in Okahandja in 1899 and was head of the Gobabis military district from 1904 to 1909 . Streitwolf took part in the suppression of the Herero and Nama uprisings in 1904/1905 and was the first imperial resident in the Caprivi Strip from 1908 to 1910, where he founded the Schuckmannsburg station on February 7, 1909 (since 2013 Luhonono ) and established the German administration. On behalf of Governor Lindequist , he and the missionary Meier went on a trip to the British Ngami Sea area in September 1907, where they met the remains of the Herero who had fled to British territory after the Battle of Waterberg . Streitwolf's mission to persuade the Herero to return to German South West Africa was unsuccessful.

Until his return to Germany in 1914, Kurt Streitwolf represented the cause of the local plaintiffs in Windhoek in complaint proceedings against settlers and colonial officials .

Streitwolf served in an Alsatian infantry regiment with the rank of major during World War I and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1919 . During the Second World War he was a colonel in the Army Command East.

Kurt Streitwolf died in Stade in 1954 at the age of 83. He was married to Gertrud von Bennigsen-Förder and had two sons.
