Evelyn De Morgan (born August 30, 1855 in London as Evelyn Pickering , † May 2, 1919 in London) was an English painter from the Pre-Raphaelite circle .

Life

She came from an upper middle class household. Her father was named Percival Pickering QC and her mother was Anna Maria Wilhelmina Spencer Stanhope, sister of the artist John Roddam Spencer Stanhope and descendant of Thomas Coke of Norfolk, who was Earl of Leicester. Evelyn de Morgan received home schooling and began taking drawing lessons when she was 15.

Your Florence-based uncle, John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, was a major influence on your work. Evelyn de Morgan visited him there often and the trips abroad to Italy allowed her to study the artists of the Renaissance . She showed particular interest in the work of Sandro Botticelli . This influenced her subject from the classic to her own style.

In 1887 she married the ceramicist William De Morgan . They lived together in London . Evelyn de Morgan died two years after her husband on May 2, 1919 in London and was buried in Brookwood ( Surrey ) cemetery.
