Friedrich Wilhelm Kantzenbach

Friedrich Wilhelm Kantzenbach (born August 30, 1932 in Stettin ; † May 16, 2013 in Roth ) was a German church historian .

Career

Friedrich Wilhelm Kantzenbach studied Protestant theology and received his doctorate in Marburg in 1955 ; he completed his habilitation in Erlangen in 1956 . In 1958 he became professor for church and dogma history at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau . In 1965 he was the first German to go to the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg as a professor for three years , then returned to Neuendettelsau and became rector of the university. He was a member of the Bavarian University Planning Commission.

In 1982 he was appointed to a chair for church history by Saarland University, which he held until his retirement in 1995.

Friedrich Wilhelm Kantzenbach's scientific work comprises around 450 publications. His books have been translated into several languages. He was an honorary member of the Albert Schweitzer Society and since 1968, due to his outstanding achievements, a full member of the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He was co-editor of the magazine for religious and intellectual history . During the Second Vatican Council he acted as a council observer. He was also a member of the III. World Conference of Churches .

Kantzenbach bequeathed his library on the subjects of art theory , architecture , painting , sculpture and handicrafts to the Saarlouis Institute for Contemporary Art in Saarland . A new library building was completed by March 2017.
