David Maslanka
David Maslanka [ mæsˈləŋkʌ ] (born August 30, 1943 in New Bedford , Massachusetts , † August 6, 2017 in Missoula , Montana ) was an American composer .
After two years at the New England Conservatory of Music (1959–1961), Maslanka studied clarinet from 1961 to 1965 at Oberlin College with George Waln and composition with Joseph R. Wood , spending one year (1963–1964) at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. From 1965 to 1971 he studied at Michigan State University , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . His teachers here were H. Owen Reed (composition), Paul Harder (music theory) and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr (clarinet).
He taught at the State University of New York (1970–1974), Sarah Lawrence College (1974–1980) and New York University (1980/81). From 1981 to 1990 he was a professor at Kingsborough Community College . From then on he lived as a freelance composer in Missoula, Montana. He has worked as a guest composer at universities and festivals and has received three National Endowment for the Arts Composer Awards and five grants from the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire . His work includes compositions for solo instruments and chamber music, choral works (including a monumental mass), compositions for wind ensembles and for symphony orchestras. He was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers .
Maslanka died of colon cancer on the night of August 6, 2017 , about a month after his wife. He left two sons and a daughter.
