H. Owen Reed

Herbert Owen Reed (born June 17, 1910 in Odessa , Missouri , † January 6, 2014 in Athens , Georgia ) was an American composer .

life and career

Reed studied music from 1929 at the University of Missouri , from 1933 at Louisiana State University and from 1937 to 1939 at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester Music. His teachers included Helen Gunderson at Louisiana State University Howard Hanson and Bernard Rogers (composition), Paul White (conducting), Harold Gleason (musicology) and Allen Irvine McHose (music theory) at the Eastman School. In 1947 he took private lessons with Roy Harris in Colorado Springs and studied composition with Bohuslav Martinů and contemporary music with Aaron Copland , Leonard Bernstein and Stanley Chappel at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood .

Reed was a member and functionary of various American musician organizations, such as the Music Teachers National Association (as head of the composition / theory section), ASCAP , the American Music Center , the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and the National Council of the National Association of Composers . From 1937 until his retirement in 1976 he taught at Michigan State University . His students included u. a. Loris Chobanian , Dinos Constantinides , Clare Fischer , David Gillingham , Adolphus Hailstork , Jere Hutcheson , David Maslanka and Greg Steinke .

In addition to several stage works, chamber and choral music and a symphony, Reed composed mainly works for wind orchestra. He also wrote several textbooks.
