Dinos Constantinides

Dinos Constantinides ( Greek Ντίνος Κωνσταντινίδης Dinos Konstandinidis , born May 10, 1929 in Ioannina ) is an American composer of Greek origin.

Life

Constantinides studied violin and music theory at the Greek Conservatory in Athens, then violin at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. He received a master's degree in music from Indiana University and a doctorate in composition from Michigan State University . His teachers included Tony Schultze , Marios Varvoglis , Yannis Papaioannou , Leda Kouroukli , Olga Menjou , George Lykoudis , Ivan Galamian , Dorothy DeLay and Josef Gingold .

He was violinist with the Greek State Orchestra in Athens for ten years , later violinist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and conductor with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra . Constantinides has been teaching at Louisiana State University since 1967, and in 1986 he received a Boyd Professorship for composition there. He directs the University's New Music Festival and the Louisiana Sinfonietta .

Constantinides composed more than two hundred works, including several operas and symphonies. For his works he received a. a. first prizes at the Brooklyn College International Chamber Competition (1981) and the First Midwest Chamber Opera Conference (1985), the Delius Composition Contest Grand Prize (1997) and several prizes from the ASCAP .
