Josef Gingold

Josef Gingold (born October 28, 1909 in Brest-Litovsk , Russian Empire ; died January 11, 1995 in Bloomington , Indiana ) was an American violinist and music teacher .

Life

He emigrated to the United States in 1920 , where he studied violin with Vladimir Graffman and Eugène Ysaÿe . After 1937 he was concertmaster (and occasional soloist) with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and later held the same position with the Cleveland Orchestra . He edited numerous books on violin technique, including those by Mazas and Kayser. His students included Volker Hartung , Sho-Mei Pelletier, who plays in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Texas, and the famous violinist Joshua Bell . Before his death, he taught at Indiana University , Jacobs School of Music, and the Juilliard School in New York City . He played on a Stradivarius violin (ex- Captinao Martinelli ) from 1683.
