David Gillingham

David R. Gillingham (* 1947 ) is an American composer and music teacher.

Gillingham studied music education at the University of Wisconsin and music theory and composition at Michigan State University . He is a professor of music at Michigan State University. Here he received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990 and helped found an international center for new music.

Gillingham became known as a composer of brass and percussion music. Many of his works are part of the standard repertoire. In 1981 he received the DeMoulin Award for his concert for bass trombone and wind ensemble. In 1990 he won the International Barlowe Competition at Brigham Young University with Heroes, Lost and Fallen . Soloists like Fred Mills , Randall Hawes and Charles Vernon emerged as interpreters of his works.
