Adolphus Hailstork

Adolphus Cunningham Hailstork III (born April 17, 1941 in Rochester / New York ) is an American composer and music teacher.

Hailstork grew up in Albany, where he sang in the church choir, took violin, piano and organ lessons. From 1959 he studied at Howard University with Mark Fax and Warner Lawson . He continued his education at the Manhattan School of Music with Ludmila Ulehla , Nicolas Flagello , Vittorio Giannini and David Diamond . From 1966 to 1968 he served in the US Armed Forces in Germany.

After his return to the United States, Hailstork received his doctorate from Michigan State University in 1971. In 1971 he became a professor of music at Youngstown State University . At the Black Music Symposium in Minneapolis in 1975, Paul Freeman conducted his composition Celebration! listed. In 1977 he became a professor at Norfolk State University . In 1977 Epitaph For A Man Who Dreamed, In Memoriam: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) .

Hailstork's First Symphony was written in 1988 and premiered under his direction that same year. 1999 saw the world premiere of his second symphony with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra . That same year, his opera Joshua's Boat premiered at the St. Louis Opera and the Kansas City Lyric Opera . Since 2000 he has taught orchestration, counterpoint and composition at Old Dominion University , where he received the Eminent Scholar Award in 2001 .
