Norfolk State University
The Norfolk State University is a public, historic African American university in Norfolk in the US state of Virginia . It was founded in 1935 as the Norfolk State Unit of Virginia Union University (VUU) .
In 1942 the college became independent from VUU , and was then named Norfolk Polytechnic College (NPC). After Virginia passed legislation over the next two years, it became part of Virginia State University (then Virginia State College ), and awarded its first degrees in 1956 .
In 1969, the academy split from Virginia State College and was renamed Norfolk State College. When the college became a university in 1979, it was given its current name.
There are currently 12,500 students enrolled here.
