Jedidah Isler is an American astrophysicist and university professor . She is the first African American woman to graduate from Yale University with a PhD in astrophysics . She studies blazars - supermassive hyperactive black holes that emit powerful jet streams. These are the most efficient particle accelerators in the universe and transfer energy through galaxies.

life and work

Isler grew up with a sister in Niagara Falls, New York and later in Virginia Beach , Virginia . She studied physics at the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS) at Norfolk State University with a bachelor's degree Magna Cum Laude. She then studied at Fisk University , earned a Master of Arts and then a Master of Science from Yale University . She received her PhD from Yale University as the first African American woman to study astrophysics. In 2014 she published her dissertation: In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion: Probing the Disk-Jet Connection in Fermi Gamma-Ray Bright Blazars, which was awarded the Roger Doxsey Dissertation Prize of the American Astronomical Society . From 2013 to 2015 she completed a two-year faculty scholarship at Syracuse University . In 2014 she received the Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Future Faculty Leaders at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University . In 2015 she received a National Science Foundation (NSF) postdoctoral fellowship in astronomy and astrophysics and did research in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vanderbilt University . In 2018 she became Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College .

In 2015, she founded VanguardSTEM, a monthly live web series with a rotating group of women in STEM, discussing a variety of topics including their research interests. In 2016 she was featured in Vanity Fair (magazine) in a profile called "Saluting a New Guard of STEM Stars". She participated in two episodes of the documentary series "How the Universe Works", in which astronomical phenomena were described and astrophysical theories were explained. In the television series "Genius of Stephen Hawking " and the television series "Mars" from National Geographic she also acted with.
