Chie Nakane

Chie Nakane ( Japanese 中 根 千 枝 , Nakane Chie; born November 30, 1926 ) is a Japanese cultural anthropologist.

Live and act

Chie Nakane attended the school of Tsuda University made her graduation in 1950 from the Faculty of Humanities at Tōkyō University in the subject "History of the Far East" (東洋 史, Tōyō-shi). In 1952 she finished her graduate studies. From 1953 she worked at the state Indian "Institute for Anthropology" and carried out research in the country in the various areas. The results led to an improved knowledge of social structures with their regional differences. Nakane also conducted research in England and Italy until she returned to Japan in 1957.

Nakane became a lecturer at Tōkyō University, assistant professor and then professor. In Japan she examined the self-image in the villages according to age and in 1967 published the book "Relationships of People in the Vertical Society" (タ テ 社会 の 人間 関係, Tate-shakai no ningen kankei), which she made known worldwide. She found that in many societies the hierarchy is not determined by qualifications, but by the social class to which one belongs.

In 1973 she became Vice President of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES). In 1980 she became director of the (東洋 文化 研究所, Tōyō bunka kenkyūjo) of Tōkyō University, 1986 chairwoman of the board of the "Society for Anthropology" (民族 学 振興 会, Minzokugaku shinkō-kai), 1995 chairman of the national committee of UNESCO and 2002 president of the "Jogakkan University Tōkyō" (東京 女 学 館 大学, Tōkyō jogakkan daigaku). Nakane is a member of the Academy of Sciences .

In 1993 Nakane was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 2001 she was awarded the Order of Culture .
