Paul Freeman (conductor)

Paul Douglas Freeman (born January 2, 1936 in Richmond , Virginia - † July 21, 2015 ) was an American conductor .

Freeman took clarinet and cello lessons and studied at Virginia State University and the Eastman School of Music . A Fulbright scholarship enabled him to perfect his training at the Hochschule für Musik with Ewald Lindemann . He began his musical career as a conductor at the Rochester Opera Theater (1961–1966) and then directed the San Francisco Community Music Center until 1968 .

He conducted the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and was Conductor in Residence of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1970 to 1979 . From 1979 to 1989 he directed the Canadian Victoria Symphony Orchestra , from 1987 also the Chicago Sinfonietta , of which he was a co-founder. Since 1996 he has been music director of the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in Prague.

As a guest conductor, Freeman has performed with more than 100 orchestras in over thirty countries. He has recorded over 200 CDs, including the three-part African Heritage Symphonic Series with the Chicago Sinfonietta with compositions by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor , Fela Sowande , William Grant Still , Ulysses Kay , George Walker , Roque Cordero , Adolphus Hailstork , Hale Smith , Michael Abels , David Baker , William Banfield and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson .
