Louis Michel Aury (* approx. 1788 in Paris , † August 30, 1821 on Old Providence Island ) was a French pirate .

Life

Aury joined the French Navy around 1802 . Until 1810 he served on several war and pirate ships, when a rich prize allowed him to purchase his own ship. He left North Carolina in April 1813 and reached Cartagena in May . There he was given command of the pirate ships of the Republic of New Granada in the war of independence against Spain . In January 1816 he was able to break the Spanish blockade of Cartagena and sailed with refugees from the besieged city to Aux-Cayes , Haiti .

Mexico

After an argument with Simón Bolívar over his pay, he joined a group of adventurers from New Orleans who wanted to take part in the battle against Spain in Texas, Mexico . Aury left Aux-Cayes on June 4, 1816 and arrived in Belize on July 17. Several ships were captured along the way. Much of the prize was lost trying to enter the port of what would later become the city of Galveston . On the night of September 7th , his Haitian crew mutinied and Aury was wounded. The mutineers left for Haiti with rich booty. A few days later, the Mexican rebel and later Foreign Minister José Manuel de Herrera (1776-1831) came to town, declared him part of the Republic of México and set Aury on September 13, 1816 as governor. Aury's privateers continued to plunder in the Gulf of Mexico . His New Orleans business friends sent troops to conquer Texas; their commander Henry Perry refused to obey Aury's orders. On November 22, 1816, the revolutionary and privateer Francisco Xavier Mina arrived, with whom Aury undertook a campaign against the Spaniards.

Florida

After returning from a pirate voyage against the Spaniards, Aury discovered that Galveston had now been occupied by the pirate Jean Laffite , who was using it as his base. On July 31, 1817, he resigned his office in Galveston and joined the rebel Gregor MacGregor , who wanted to attack the Spanish Florida from Amelia Island . In December 1817, the American army drove him from Florida.

Old Providence Island

Then he was able to conquer Old Providence Island in the Caribbean off the coast of Colombia on July 4, 1818 , where he operated a successful trade with the booty of his pirate trips. Aury is said to have died there in August 1821 when his horse threw him off. It has also been alleged that he was still living in Havana in 1845 .
